STARDUST & STRUCTURE

Where light meets matter.
Where dust becomes form.

Ideas emerging from thin air by associating freely, like the crystallisation of a cooling liquid. Matter settling into its most stable form, releasing energy and warmth. Apparent chaos transforming into observed order.

Inspired by the idea that both crystalline structures and digital realities are built from polygonal foundations, the work translates microscopic clustering into sculptural gold. Thousands of individually fired granules gather into triangular constellations, referencing both natural crystal growth and the geometric language of the digital age.

These universal transformations are captured through this set of jewels. After a design process in which conversations with philosophers and scientists helped articulate her intuitive knowledge, the artist drew on the full depth of her experience and craftsmanship to create a refined expression in solid gold. Where ancient technique and contemporary thought converge.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Sonja Hunefeld is a Dutch goldsmith renowned for her mastery of ancient granulation. A technique dating back over 5,000 years and practiced today by only a small number of specialists worldwide. Working entirely by hand, she alloys her own gold and produces each granule individually, fusing them without visible solder. Her practice bridges archaeology, metallurgy, and contemporary design, combining historical craftsmanship with a research-driven, forward-looking perspective.

In this piece, Hunefeld unites origin and system, intuition and structure. Ancient technique meets contemporary thought. Transforming gold into a meditation on how form, order, and meaning emerge from the smallest particles.
